I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affects my opinion of the book.
When Kate Thompson’s father is killed by the notorious Rose Riders for a mysterious journal that reveals the secret location of a gold mine, the eighteen-year-old disguises herself as a boy and takes to the gritty plains looking for answers and justice. What she finds are devious strangers, dust storms, and a pair of brothers who refuse to quit riding in her shadow. But as Kate gets closer to the secrets about her family, she gets closer to the truth about herself and must decide if there’s room for love in a heart so full of hate.
In the spirit of True Grit, the cutthroat days of the Wild West come to life for a new generation.
I loved this book! It wasn’t even on my radar until a few weeks ago, but I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to read Vengeance Road. I found it to be a fairly fast read, and trust me, once you start, you won’t want to put it down for anything! Vengeance Road was such a refreshing change for me. Have you ever heard the expression “Love is in the details”? Erin Bowman does such an incredible job transporting the reader to the Wild West with all the little details, right down to the language the characters use. And that folks, is what made me fall in love with this book!
This book reminded me so much of True Grit, but at the same time was completely different! Kate Thompson was the epitome of an amazing character. She was tough, brave in the face of certain death and determined to see her father avenged at all cost. But she never lost her humanity. She was never so wholly consumed by revenge that she lost who she truly was. Which brings me to….
`What I loved`
The characters will make or break a book for me. They definitely made this book! Each of Bowman’s characters are so authentic that they leap from the page as living, breathing people.
I loved Kate, but I had a special heart for the Colton boys. Especially Will! He was the perfect mischief to Jesse’s responsibility. The laughter to Jesse’s seriousness. The laid-back to Jesse’s tension. Will completed Jesse and Kate in my opinion.
Wooo-wee was there a humdinger of a twist in this book! (See what I did there 🙂 ) I pride myself on seeing the foreshadowing and generally not being surprised by things that happen in books, but I did not see this twist coming. It totally floored me! I’m telling you guys, it was a game changer! Bowman weaves the foreshadowing so expertly with the story that you have no idea which is which!
What I didn’t like
There’s nothing bad I can say about this book. It never slacked on the action. There was no sluggish middle to slog through. It was real, it was gritty, it was raw emotion. I felt like I was riding right beside Kate the entire time, completely transported to the old west.
If you guys haven’t picked up Vengeance Road yet, I urge you to! This is a book you could easily read over and over again!
Drop me a line and let me know what you thought about Vengeance Road!
