ENDURE by Sara B Larson

25440127Endure (Defy, Book 3) Hardcover – December 29, 2015

The remarkable third novel in Sara B. Larson’s bestselling Defy series!

At last, Alexa and King Damian are engaged to be married. But their lives are far from safe. The kingdom of Antion is under siege, and Rylan is a prisoner of the enemy. Even worse, Alexa remains at the mercy of the evil Dansiian Rafe, who controls her mind and can force Alexa to kill or harm Damian at any moment. Despite this, Alexa is determined to rescue Rylan, which soon leads her far from Damian and deep into enemy territory.

When she arrives, what awaits her is deadlier than anything she could have ever imagined: an army of black sorcerers, and a horrifying plot to destroy the world as Alexa knows it. Will she be able to gather the strength to free herself, protect the love of her life, and save the land? Will there ever be true peace?

Acclaimed author Sara B. Larson has woven a stunning, romantic, and evocative finale to the Defy trilogy, that is sure to leave readers breathless until the very last page.

It has been awhile since I’ve done a Waiting on Wednesday, but I’m so excited for this book!  I can’t wait to delve back into Alexa’s world.  And the best part about it?  I only have a short time to wait!  Endure is being released December 29th!   Endure is definitely at the top of my Christmas list this year!

I was so excited to see this box at my door! And let me tell you guys, it was a LARGE and HEAVY box!

The packaging is pretty simple, but I like that.  And who are we kidding, we’re in it for what’s inside anyway! 🙂

So without further ado…………………

The inside!

There are several subscription boxes that use the shredded paper for packing, and then there are some boxes that don’t use anything.  This box opted for simple tissue paper wrapped goodies.  Simple is good!  Who wants to pick up all those pieces of shredded paper anyway? 🙂

The blue card is the list of all the goodies inside.  It’s face down when you open the box so if you don’t want spoilers you can set it aside until later.  Ready to see the goodies?

That is one packed box!

So the first thing I pulled out was the book on top.  It is Unforgiven by Lauren Kate, and is the companion book to her Fallen series.  Now, I’m not familiar with this series myself, but it is a beautiful hardcover and the premise sounds very interesting!  I was enlightened by my friend Becky (@Becky_LoveDemi) who co-blogs over at BookNerdAddict.com that there is a movie in the works for the series as well!

Besides Unforgiven, there were two book related items: a metal cuff and guitar key chain.

According to the note included, the metal bracelet represents the mechanical cuff some of the troublemakers sent to Sword and Cross were forced to wear.

The Guitar Keychain represents Lilith and her song.  They changed Cam and inspired him to make music and become the rocker known at Sword and Cross.

Most bookish boxes I’ve seen send along bookish items that may relate to the book or that particular month’s theme.  What I found interesting and different about Fantasy and Sci-fi books was, though the items absolutely held significance to the book, they weren’t necessarily bookish items.

That could go either way for some people.  I really like the idea of getting bookish items and supporting those who make them.  But on the other hand, I really like the fact that the curators of this box really took the time to find specific items related to Unforgiven.

There were still more goodies underneath all of that!

That IS a second book!  And guess what?  It’s signed!!

Finally, there were two bookmarks and a draw string bag.  I know it’s hard to tell from the picture, but it’s really big!

According to the blue card, the gold wings represent Cam’s wings.  The bag was an item specially made just for this box and cannot be bought anywhere else!

Here is what everything looks like together!

I couldn’t be more pleased with this box!  I was impressed by the quality of each item included, and feel that it is worth the subscription fee. I can’t wait to see what Fantasy and Sci-Fi Books do for the January’s box!

I loved this box so much that I want to share it with all of you!  Enter for a chance to win Fantasy and Sci-fi Book’s very first box below! (US/CAN only)

I was so excited for October’s Loot Crate.  If you’re not familiar with Loot Crate, they offer a monthly geek and gamer subscription box.  Every month Loot Crate sends out exclusive geek and gamer gear centered around a monthly theme.  October’s theme was TIME.

My husband has been receiving Loot Crate for over a year, and I’ve always enjoyed the fun and unique items in each crate. Loot Crate had announced that October’s crate would contain a Tshirt and an exclusive Funko Pop. Being a huge Dr. Who fan, I made the plunge myself and ordered my very first Loot Crate.

I couldn’t have been more disappointed.

My disappointment was two-fold.  First, although the theme for October was TIME, there was only one Dr. Who related item in the crate.

Now, a Sonic Spork would be kind of cool, IF it was usable.  Unfortunately, the quality was poor and I doubt it would stand up to multiple washes rendering it useless.  I had really been hoping that the Dr. Who item would have been the exclusive Pop or shirt.

The remaining contents of October’s Loot Crate centered around celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Back to the Future and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.  As you can see from the picture below there was a Hoverboard replica, a Doc Brown Funko Pop, and a Bill and Ted’s excellent Tshirt.

Here is where my second disappoint came in.  As a child of the 80’s, my disappointment about the lack of Dr. Who gear could have begrudgingly been assuaged by the fun Bill and Ted Tshirt.  Being a first time subscriber, I based my shirt size off of Loot Crates sizing chart.  I chose a Woman’s size medium shirt because that is the size I wear everyday.  No brainer right?

I was shocked when I pulled the shirt from the crate.  Woman’s size medium? More like child’s size x-small! And just in case you’re thinking that maybe the shirt sizing just ran a little small, here is a picture of my 40 POUND 9-year-old wearing the shirt.

I immediately contacted customer support and checked Reddit to find that I was not an isolated case. There were pages and pages of posts concerning the sizing problem which seemed to only affect the Woman’s sizing.

Customer support did contact me to apologize for the shirts running “a bit smaller” (that’s laughable) this month and provided a shipping label for me to send it back in the crate for replacement.  However, when I inquired as to the new size they would send me, they suggested a Woman’s XL……..  I have yet to receive the replacement shirt.

Overall, I am extremely disappointed with not only this month’s Loot Crate, but the company itself.  I understand that different shirts run different sizes, but to say the shirts ran “a bit small” is ridiculous.  A woman’s shirt fitting a 9 year-old isn’t a bit small. Their response to the sizing issue was lackluster and insincere and because of that, they have lost me as a customer.

Loot Crate is not the only subscription box aimed at geeks and gamers.  Though Loot Crate’s monthly subscription fee is probably the lowest, I feel there are several other fantastic options out there.

Did anyone else get October’s crate?

If you haven’t noticed by now, subscription boxes are pretty hot.  It seems like there is a box for everything these days and if you’re like me, you’ve been tempted more than once.  I finally took the plunge this month with Loot Crate (But that’s another review!)  and was happily biding my time, waiting for delivery when I stumbled across GeekFuel.

What initially caught my attention was the promise of exclusive Guardians of the Galaxy items.  My husband is a huge Guardians fan and I thought I’ll get it and, if it’s good, I’ll save it for Christmas as a surprise gift!  Another thing that was appealing was the promise of a tshirt in every crate.  Other subscription boxes offer the chance of a tshirt but it’s not a monthly thing.  It might have been a bit of a risk as Geek Fuel is a MYSTERY box so they don’t hint about the content.  But guess what?

This is how it comes every month.  Pretty eye catching!

I really like the little robot guy!

Here’s what it looks like when you open the lid.

The suspense is killing me!

And finally…….

I have to say, I am completely blown away by the Geek Fuel subscription box!  I loved every item so much that I didn’t even wait to give it to my husband for Christmas.  He got it immediately after opening! Every Geek Fuel box comes with a tshirt and a PC game, and I adored the Guardians Funko Pop. (Though I would have preferred Nebula, but hey, it wasn’t for me!)  There was also a fantastic Star Wars pillowcase featuring Admiral Ackbar, an energy drink, and several Back to the Future items.

The Geek Fuel subscription box is completely worth the money!  Not only was I surprised and pleased by the contents, they got it to me super fast.  This was my first month with them and I subbed right as the boxes were shipping so I received my box in a matter of days.

I can’t recommend Geek Fuel enough!  My husband has been a Loot Crate subscriber for over a year now and I have to say,  I think Geek Fuel has them beat.  If you guys are interested in checking out Geek Fuel for yourselves, here’s the link:

I’m curious what kind of subscription boxes you guys subscribe to?  Let me know in the comments!

Review: Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

23395680Illuminae (The Illuminae Files #1)

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

I was lucky enough to pick up an ARC of this book at C2E2 this past March.  At first, I had no idea the goldmine that I had fallen into.  I posted a Thank You picture to my twitter for the publishers and soon after comments came rolling in exclaiming my good luck.  My good luck indeed!

There is no way to adequately put into feelings my love for the glorious thing that is Illuminae.  So, because so many times it reminded me of Firefly, (BROWN COATS FOREVER!!!)  I will try to summarize all the feels through Firefly/Serenity Gifs.

Let’s start with the cover.

Yes Jayne, it IS pretty cunning. Not to mention intriguing and alluring!  Also, it matches your hat quite nicely!

The formatting in this book is anything but typical. But coupled with a plot that just won’t quit, it’s fascinating!  I loved turning each page just to see how the story would be delivered to me next!

So in that light, here is my attempt to describe Illuminae purely using gifs!

(Oh no! Plot twist!)

(Stuff gets worse)

(stuff gets a lot worse)

(the end. where you’re left thinking, WHAT THE CRAP JUST HAPPENED?!)

If you are looking for an exhilarating, can’t put it down read, then this book is for you.  The writing is gorgeous, the action is non-stop and heart pounding with jaw dropping plot twists.  I cannot recommend this book enough! Have you guys read it?  I’d love to know what you though of Illuminae!
